SUMMARY:

The premise is that you are not an accident because you were created by God with specific purposes in mind before the earth's foundations. Man and woman was and is the focus of his love where everything made around us was made with us in mind first. I suggest reading Genesis 1-3 with the paradigm of you preparing for your first born's room before being born.

Think about the premise's implications. For the creation, it implies purpose, meaning, significance and hope! It tells us there is an external objective truth where there are parameters for our lives not because God is a control freak with a chip on His shoulder, but they are there for our protection due to His love for us. We don't have to make up our own purpose in life! We don't have to make up the rules(right & wrong). He already has made them up. He is the author of them and referee too. They exist for our protection and His purposes He has determined to bring about. Here's the rub. He's a just God. He started the club, sacrificed His son for us to be apart of it now and eternally and made the rules with consequences that follow based on our choices. He is sovereign over the club and He does play seriously! If you don't want to belong to the club, you die in this life gradually and eternally. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it: but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matt. 16:25 That which He gave you to steward (your health, work, relationships and creation around you) begins dying when you reject the gift of membership that demands submission.

Let's look at the worldview that you are an accident. There is no sovereign God, no external purpose, meaning, significance or measure of right and wrong. What does that leave the individual? Nothing. No hope. No order. We do a good job of communicating that to our kids at school:

"Kids, welcome to biology 101. First, you need to know that you are an accident. Globs of goo one day accidently got together to become organic, then grew some fins, then legs & wings, crawled up on some land, then decided to sit up and start walking, then grew some hair. After awhile the apes decided to shave where man is now stunted in this evolutionary development. "Goo to you by way of the zoo" as Frank Peretti would say. So, you have no meaning or purpose in life and ....(ring, ring) Oh, class is over. Run along to your next class about self-esteem."

next class..."Kids, first you need to know that your are a good accident..." "Just be careful about making other accidents safely"

By not saying anything in the home to your children and others, you abdicate them learning the above worldview or a variation there of where self becomes the focus and arbitor of truth.

Whether we are an accident or not doesn't concern me. The truth is what you do with your life howerver you got there. I totally respect your belief.

You have summarized the book very well--but what is your opinion about it. Do you agree? If so how has it changed the way you live?

Stevendedalus : I agree that what we do now with our lives is everything, but for me at least, My vision, destiny and source of passion is derived from the reality of my past starting the day God conceived me in His mind. Knowing about our ancestry brings honor to them. Knowing about God's history He has imparted to us all also honors Him. Rick Warren is laying a foundation of basic biblical truth and worldview that will help sustain us through the valleys and offer an apologetics that will intellectually stand up to any worldview the enemy has cooked up....your thoughts??

Sherye Hanson : So far I have agreed with the premises Rick Warren has laid out as a foundation. In Ch. 1 & 2, I expanded the logical conclusions and paths one takes when the individual decides to be god. Cultures of past and present bears witness of them. Upcoming chapters ask my pointed personal questions. Eventually you will come to know more about my journey God has taken me and some questions I still can't answer or continue to wrestle with. I ask for your patience.
